Could an Uncharted Prequel Work?

You can say prequels are overplayed and are not needed. Since we already know what happens to our characters. Take a look at Gears of War: Judgement. Even though it’s a good game for the most part, it’s not needed in the Gears of War story arc. Since the story concluded in Gears of War 3. Although your average Gears of War fan will tell you that more Gears is always good. Which I can’t argue with. Because let’s face it, fans want to see their favorite series continue. Wether it be a prequel, sequel, or a reboot. Which Tomb Raider did really well.

Uncharted has seen 4 games in the series. 3 for the PlayStation 3 and one for the PS Vita. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception was the last major Uncharted game to come out. The story revealed how Nathan first met Sully. Which was played through a flashback, 20 years earlier from the game’s present day. Young Nate is in search for Sir Francis’ ring, which we see him have through out the series. This is where Nathan first meets Sully. Who at the time was working for Katherine Marlowe. The game’s main antagonist. Sully was hired by Katherine to get Sir Francis’ ring, and this is where he first crosses paths with Nathan. After Nathan steals the ring, he is then captured by Katherine and her men. After making an escape, Nate soon gets cornered and is about to get shot by one of Katherine’s henchmen. Sully comes to Nathan’s rescue just in time and kills the henchmen. After this whole ordeal; Sully and Nathan become friends, which then Sully begins mentoring young Nate.

After many adventures through out the years together, Sully and Nate have some great stories to tell. Great stories can make for some great plot lines. A prequel could work well within the Uncharted universe. Naughty Dog can introduce new characters, or how Nathan first met Chloe Frazer. There are a lot of stories to tell here. The Uncharted game’s aren’t continuous. They’re all new adventures. Which I love, because each time it’s a brand new story. Compare the events from Drakes Fortune to Among Thieves or to Drake’s Deception. They’re all so different, and the game’s all take place at different times in the Uncharted timeline. With the Gears of War games, the story is continuous and takes place after the previous game. So with a prequel, we already know what happens to the characters and the story. Which ended with Gears of War 3.  The point is, in Uncharted a prequel could work. Since every game’s story is different.

What kind of stories can Naughty Dog tell in Uncharted? As many as they’re willing to do. Justin Richmond, Uncharted’s game director has said. “We never set out to make a three-part series from the beginning. We have always sort of seen it as a stand-alone adventure, like you are gonna pick up any one of the games and play and out of order. It still makes sense. You can still understand the characters and the plot.” (Via VentureBeat) So a prequel could in fact work well in the Uncharted universe. Naughty Dog could tell Sully and Nate’s first adventures together, where Nate is still learning the ropes of being a treasure hunter. They can take the story pretty much anywhere in the world, so long as it makes sense. Would a prequel even be considered? Probably not, but it could make for some interesting stories.

Wether or not Naughty Dog will work on Uncharted 4 is still up in the air. With the PlayStation 4 officially announced, Uncharted 4 would be a great launch title for the console. I’m looking forward to the next Uncharted game, whenever that may be.
